Card of the Month Aqua People
Keyword: Aqua People Who Are “Doing Well” With What You Have So what do you think it would mean to be one of the “aqua people?” Why or why not do you think you might want to be one? Perhaps you need to know the story before you decide? The fable takes place at the scene of a great party honoring the success of some young people celebrating major new business acquisitions. The champagne is flowing. Glamor, glitz and frivolity are all the rage. Enter, from out of nowhere, a shabbily dressed older man asking for a diet coke. Who is he? Has anyone seen him before? Should he be asked to leave because he so clearly doesn’t belong Unsure, the hosts go over to make his acquaintance. The tone of the evening changes dramatically as he introduces himself. Waving his hands to what’s going on in the room, he quietly says, "You must no longer ask for more, but do well with what you have." Think about that because those are pretty profound words. What does it mean to not ask for more? What does it mean to do well with what you have? Is it about appreciating your blessings? incorporating more fun or joy or laughter into your life? From a different perspective, is it about having a stronger life purpose? The old man really gets the young people thinking and when he (magically?) conjurs? Up levels of water (aqua) which rise and fall, flow and change, with the very nature of their thoughts, you can only imagine what an effect his words present. As they’re appreciating and not wanting more, the water is a beautiful blue color and of comfortable temperature. As their thoughts shift to dissatisfaction, fear or simply moving out of the present moment, the quality of the water becomes uncomfortably deep. So, what then does it mean to be one of the “aqua” people? How do we decide if they’re a tribe we want to be part of? The flowing and ever changing nature of the water so prevalent in this story leaves considerable room for our own interpretations, and the old man “disappears” from view before he can be directly asked. But there certainly must be clues and lessons to ponder in his soft spoken rejoinder: “You must no longer ask for more, but do well with what you have." And , if that focus on doing well with what you have is indeed a big part of what it means to be one of the “aqua people”, then count me in as a member of the tribe!
