Key idea: Images that Work “In an instant they were all in beautiful clear blue water. The temperature was perfect. The water was rising. Mike spoke first. "What's going on? Where is the land?" Panic set in. How would they survive? "Wait," said Peter. "We're getting more."… "Peter's right," said Crystal. "We asked for more, so we're getting more water. "And with that it began to rain and the water rose faster” (tori Hartman). You get the idea. The amount and quality of the water rose and fell with the quality of the young people’s thoughts. As they expressed contentment and joy, the water levels were clear and wonderfully blue. As their desire for “more” won out, the water rose uncomfortably. Back and forth. Changing as their thoughts altered between appreciation and fun to fear and dissatisfaction. What a wonderful metaphor for appreciating all the wonderful things in our lives but also more generally what a powerful reminder of the difference an image can make. Of course as in this case, saying it and hearing it is good. In fact it seems as though we all seem to need a surprising number of reminders to really get the idea that genuinely expressing gratitude can improve and even transform the quality of our lives. Why it’s so hard to get such a simple idea to click in is another story altogether. But because it is indeed so hard to get the idea to click in,all the more reason that a powerful image can help. Forget the abstract idea of gratitude. What about the concrete image of the rise and fall of beautiful blue water flowing magically in directions in tandem to the changing nature of our thoughts. It’s a metaphor that makes you pay more attention and stop and think. It really gets the idea across in a way that helps us remember and appreciate. In what ways might you develop an image to help you concretize and better put into practice something you have been really wanting to give more power to in your life?
