Aqua Thought of the week Key Theme: The Whole Bigger Than the Sum of Its Parts? “Aqua mixes the Blue of communication with the Green of unconditional love and in its essence it is about communicating to others from your heart” (Tori Hartman). Definition of the color Aqua: “A light blueish green to a light greenish blue” (cite) So what is aqua? Is it more blue than green? More green than blue? Do we have to mix blue and green to “make” aqua? On the one hand, it’s important to think of aqua is a combination of its component parts of blue and green. Thus in the lingo of the chakra (Tori Hartman quote above), this thought process highlights the need to link what’s in our heart with the kind of communication we put out there into the world to let other people know what we’re really feeling. It’s not just about the heart, and it doesn’t just involve communicating. The connection between the two obviously strengthens the nature of each and serves as a critical key to success. What if, in addition, we simplified the conversation? What if we simply thought of aqua as its own unique color, “A light blueish green to a light greenish blue”. What’s different between these two characterizations? There’s still in the second case a referent to the more common colors of blue and green. But based on the definition, the reference is used only as a descriptor in which to situate the essence and uniqueness of aqua. Not only do we understand aqua as an actual combining of blue and green but we truly get that it embodies its own unique shade. So what then is aqua? On the one hand, it can be described—productively—in terms of its components. At the same time, and perhaps more importantly, aqua also serves as a reminder that the whole, as they say, is more than the sum of its parts? How this week do these ideas resonate with you? Keyword: Flow Water equals flow. Think about the ever changing nature of the ocean or the ebb and flow of tides. As a sailor, you can be cruising along on a calm sea for hours, but in seconds, the weather can turn on a dime. When you’re out there as a swimmer, you never actually know when a wave will catch you by surprise. It’s this flow and ever changing nature of course that makes the oceanexperience so engaging. What about the flow of life? How do you handle all the ups, downs and surprising changes of direction? The unexpected interruptions in the normal scheme of things? Aqua serves as a reminder that whatever’s going on for you—moments of tranquility or stormy times--it’s not about thinking of things as “good” or “bad.” As we describe the character of the oceans, so too we can view the ups and downs of life as all part of the changing nature of the natural course of events. As we learn from aqua and as the old saying teaches, going honestly with the flow and participating fully in where it takes us is after all the only way to go!
