Rhonda Rhino of Amethyst Possibility When do you feel successful? Fulfilled? Do you experience these feelings on a regular basis or only at certain times? Not exactly easy questions In fact they might be some of the most perplexing we all face. But the fable--one of my favorites--of Rhonda Rhino of Amethyst for me highlights the idea that achieving your dreams, even in the face of difficult circumstances and multiple tries, remains indeed possible. And so things weren't always easy or comfortable for Rhonda. That she would come to experience her dream, belonging to a warm and loving family, in some ways appeared pretty unlikely. First, something you might not know about rhinos is that some of them seem actually to be drinkers and alcoholics in the same way that us humans are. Thus, Rhonda's mom was indeed the "herd lush" and a bully who made fun of her daughter's gentle nature. Instead of belonging to a loving family, Rhonda had to act as a rescuer for her mom, time after time bringing her home after too many out-of-control outings in Rhino Town. And then there was another rescue--of a very different sort. Faced with human hunters, Rhonda ignored her fear and acted courageously to save the life of a little human boy caught out of place in the gunfire. Carrying him to safety, she played with Jeffrey, fed him coconut milk and cuddled him to sleep. Subsequently, the boy's appreciative parents took her home and happily made her a full fledged member of their family. So out of that unlikely set of circumstances, from out of nowhere, Rhonda found she had achieved her dream. You could take the story further, trying to understand why Rhonda was successful while other rhinos weren't or speculating as to how her ability to forgive and stay in the moment led to the miracle. For me, Rhonda Rhino from Amethyst is just a nice story highlighting the inspiration of holding on to hope, keeping your eyes on the prize and continually taking steps toward the vision that you find truly moving.
