Reggie Rust: Faith
Inspiration: “Reggie Rust serves to protect us. Be grateful he is there, for you are being protected.” The fable of Reggie Rust begins with the story of two young men out for a fun day of hiking. The character of the adventure changes when suddenly and from out of nowhere Their path is blocked by the mythical and at first annoying figure of Reggie Rust. There’s simply no way around him. Attempts to move forward prove futile. The young men take a few steps; Reggie blocks them. They complain and stomp around; Reggie remains immobile. They make camp for a couple of days; there’s no movement from Reggie, even when they try tomove on one last time. They are going nowhere, at least not the way they thought they were going. What to do? As the young menconfront their confusion, their surprise and their anger, they make two decisions that become key to their overall success. For one, they manage to settle themselves down enough to trust their faith and their intuition. That is, after screaming and stomping and expressing what can only be described as justifyable upset about the literal physical impasse, , they simply decide to switch gears. They decide to sit and simply wait for a new plan to emerge. What they’re doing isn’t working so what’s the best way to re-route? After all the futility of their complaining, they become quiet enough to trust that their intuition will help. Second, in the process of waiting for new ideas to come, they come to the important realization that perhaps Reggie is there more as a protector than a path blocker. After all, he has actually stopped them before, even leading them to find a better way. They remember that, long ago, their uncle too had a path blocked by Reggie—after being denied the factory job he thought he wanted, Uncle Sylvester found a better life through his discoveries of oil. What if whenconfronted by blocks whether in our physical or emotional lives, we could substitute faith and intuition for the understandable and normal impatience and frustration? What if in the face of feeling stuck, we could remember that maybe the universe is protecting us and actually keeping us safe? What If we could really trust, at a gut level, that when things aren’t going the way we want them to, we have the knowing inside of us and maybe even a shout out of support from mythical Reggie Rust, to come up with a better way? At least for me, if I remembered these things more often, I’d make my life a lot easier. Trusting that Reggie is on my side would help me feel more of the time lot safer.
