Yellow thought of the Week (June 2013)
Keyword: Agency "There are painters who transform the sun to a yellow spot, but there are others who with the help of their art and their intelligence, transfer a yellow spot into the sun."--Pablo Passo What a powerful idea: to start with something small and insignificant-- in this case a yellow spot on a canvas—and transform it into something meaningful and wonderful—here, an image of the sun. With this quote, Picasso, who should know, has also gone one step further to provide a recipe—at least one that worked for him—for bringing this kind of transformation into fruition. It takes, as he says, a combination of art and intelligence. Now, I don’t think you have to be a great artist to appreciate the power of these words. Instead, how do they apply to your own experience? What “small” action have you taken in the past that has led to something much bigger and/or made something else better? What set of circumstances, on your end and perhaps with the help of others, contributed to this transformation? I like here the idea that a series of small actions—sometimes even just one such action—can set in motion a chain of events leading to an outcome of much greater significance. You don’t have to begin a transformation with a bang! Even more, I am inspired by the sense of agency and empowerment. I might not be a great painter with the “art and intelligence” to produce a visual image which will inspire the“masses”. But in my own life, I can certainly look around and think about ways I can use some seemingly insignificant“yellow spot” to create a big difference in my life. In your own way, how can you take inspiration from this quote to create something better this week?
