Inspirational Color Quote of the Week: Colors Purple, Pink and Green Purple? Poppycock?! “You buy any book on color theory today, and it's just complete poppycock. Everybody comes out of school painting pink, purple and green. The whole damn cartoon industry has pink, purple and green on their mind.” --John Kricfalusi (cartoon animator; writer; director) What do you think? Do you get the idea he’s not happy with the current state of the cartoon industry? Too much conformity. Too much tameness of the colors. Too much teaching of not particularly original ideas. Well you’ve got to hand it to him; Mr. Kricfalusi , a noted cartoonist and animator in his own right, certainly doesn’t mince words; there isn’t much doubt as to what he thinks! Which is to say, he thinks it’s complete poppycock! Ok, so what about you? What in your own life do you feel is a total waste, and what do you want to do to change it? It’s easy to write Mr. Kricfalusi off as someone who is too opinionated; he clearly likes to go against the grain, and the cartoons he himself has developed in fact have been described as anything but tame! It’s easy to say, as it’s often suggested we ourselves do in our own lives, he’s focusing too much on what’s not working; we would all be better served if he refocused and focused us on some positive ways to make things better. But wait a minute. Sometimes you’ve got to get clear on what you don’t like before you can take the next step. and sometimes it’s harder than you think to focus on what you don’t like/isn’t working. We say things are ok even if they’re not quite. We don’t know how to make changes, so we fudge things and say they’re ok the way they are. We don’t exactly get rewarded if we’re seen as complainers. But maybe as often as we tell ourselves to focus on the positive, maybe we can get closer to that positive if we first get clear on the negative. And then there’s the color purple (along of course with the colors pink and green). An understatement to say it’s A pretty positive color. Purple with its associations to characteristics including intuition, wisdom and that which is spiritual. Purple with its connections to royalty and power. Purple conjuring up the magic and mystery of the universe. All of which highlight some pretty wonderful and profound qualities; all of which asking us to say yes! But what if what’s involved in saying yes sometimes includes saying no? Purple; a color of intuition, suggesting we know what we like but also that we get easy-to-ignore inklings when things aren’t working? The color of wisdom; sometimes we’re wiser for admitting we need things to change? The color of royalty; would a king or queen hesitate for even a moment to express things in the smallest shape or form that he or she doesn’t like? So just as Mr. Kricfalusi lets us know how much “poppycock” he sees in the modern cartoon industry let’s acknowledge when there’s that kind of “poppycock” in our own lives. Let’s use the purple, pink and green to say no as well as yes, and let’s by taking out some of the “no’s”, let’s leave more room for getting to yes. How do these ideas resonate with you, and what are one or two actions you might want to take in the next day or so on that basis?
